Shakira fights all the way to Washington!

Human rights are a personal issue for the Colombian super star.

Shakira might just be world-famous for her unique voice and tantalizing hip moves, but that’s not even half of what makes her special.  This Chica is also a hopeless romantic with a heart of gold; and an inspiring mind made up of idealistic dreams and endless motivation.

Yesterday afternoon, the Colombian poet/singer/dancing-sensation super-star went all the way up to Capitol Hill, in order to speak on behalf of and advocate a global education reform via the Global Campaign for Education.  The campaign hopes to one day provide free education for the the estimated 300 million+ underprivileged children of the globe between the ages of 6 and 12.  The project is set to begin with 5 million students from over 100 countries.  The ultimate goal is to make education a human right, and not a luxury:

In the developing world, where I come from, sometimes education is considered a luxury, a privilege, and not a human right, and this always bothered me.  So this is personal to me…  It is so important because it addresses about every aspect of development, from agriculture, which impacts on nutrition, to preventing disease, like HIV/AIDs and malaria, to improving and creating economic growth and social growth.  Education can really save lives. Education is the key.

Now, is this girl pure awesome or what?  When I was about 12, I heard a teenage Shakira answer one reporter’s typical and generic “how-would-you-save-the-world” question by wisely stating that in her opinion, self-esteem and education were the two most important tools needed in order to change the world and save the needy.  I never forgot that interview, and I am now all sentimental and proud of this spicy Latina who chose to follow her dreams, no matter what!

 Just watch, people.  Shakira and her tiny little frame will singlehandedly change our world, one “personal” issue at a time!

The Global Campaign for Education plans to soon break the world record of largest amount of students worldwide taking the very same lesson at the very same time.  The subject will be the importance of education.
