Thomas Beatie, the formerly pregnant man, is shopping around a reality show. Beatie is transgendered and transitioned from a woman to a man, but when his wife could not become pregnant, he decided to carry the baby with his own ladybits. He gave birth to a girl last year and then a boy earlier this year. The “pregnant man” became a tabloid sensation, and the he and his wife are hoping to cash in with a reality show focusing on their family.
They are reportedly discussing a reality show with Oxygen or TLC. TLC loves a reality show about out of the ordinary people doing ordinary things, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you see the show on the Fall line-up.
I don’t know why the odd-people-doing-normal-things genre is so damn popular. Little People, Big World: they go grocery shopping, but they are little people! Jon and Kate Plus 8: they go on vacation, but they have 8 kids! 18 Kids and Counting: They eat dinner, but they have a boatload of kids!
Thomas Beatie has said the reason he welcomed all the publicity he had when he was pregnant was because he felt like he was normalizing transgender people. I agree that visibility equals acceptance, but I can’t help but think that any reality show is going to edit the show to make their family seem as freakish as possible. “Look, they eat Cheerios just like us! But the Dad used to have a vadge, GROSS.“
