“Bad Lieutenant” Remake Has Nothing In Common With Bad Lieutenant

You ever see the original Bad Lieutenant? It’s so rough that it’s even censored on cable. I watched it for the first time on Showtime and was intrigued enough to investigate the unrated version. That has the sequence where the Bad Lieutenant, played by Harvey Keitel, pulls over two teenaged unlicensed drivers and forces them to simulate oral sex to avoid a ticket. In the Werner Herzog-helmedĀ “remake” that recently bowed at Cannes, Nic Cage plays the title role, but the film reportedly has no similarities to the original, so if you want to see Nic Cage say, “Show me how you suck c*ck…you show me…you show me how you suck that c*ck” you’re just going to have to ask him in person.

Mr. Herzog told the Cannes journalists that he has never even seen the original. His version was saddled with the title when he was brought on board; he then did extensive rewrites of his own. Still, he hopes that he and Abel Ferrara, director of the original, can view each other’s versions soon. By the way, Abel Ferrara has publicly stated he hoped Werner “dies in hell,” and that viewing Herzog’s trailer was “enough of that.” Fingers crossed, Werner.
