Barbarella To Be Re-Made Into a Serious Movie, Why?

Barbarella, the cult classic film of insane 1960’s sci-fi mixed with free love, is poised for a re-make. Unknown screenwriter Joe Gazzam is lined up to write the script, and the original producer Dino De Laurentiis (annoying Food Network star Giada‘s granddaddy) is also attached to the project.

Robert Rodriguez had been set to direct with Universal backing the project, but the film fell through.

The 1968 classic stars Jane Fonda as a woman who is charged with finding an evil scientist, Durand-Durand (yes, the inspiration for the band Duran Duran) in the year 40,000. She must travel the galaxy in a shag carpeted rocket, performing costume changes about every 20 minutes. As she attempts to complete her mission she has sex with various oddballs. It’s basically a Gay Pride Parade on film. Boots, Big Hair, Sex, Acid Trips, Glitter, Half Naked Men Wearing Angel Wings.

And yet, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “The new take on the iconic character will not be campy, though it will keep the sexuality; there will be seductions, but the focus will be on the adventure.” NO CAMP?!

That’s like saying they want to remake a Stephen Segal movie and leave out the punching. It can’t be done, and if done, what the hell is the point?
